SERVICES

I have many years’ experience translating literary fiction and non-fiction, subtitles for film and TV, video-game content and all manner of commercial and legal documents. Work with me to ensure your texts receive the care, clarity and consistency they deserve, or to secure expert support and advice for your existing language teams.

WHO I WORK WITH

I love working with people who care about their writing.

I’m all about channelling creatives who play with language in interesting ways: to make powerful statements; to share valuable perspectives; to add a bit of light to the world.

On the commercial side, companies who reach out to me are looking for an experienced translator who truly cares about their products and services and who can handle texts that go beyond the purely technical. I'm often called upon when a film or video game incorporates rhyming poetry, song lyrics, jokes and puns – styles of expression which are notoriously difficult (and immensely satisfying) to translate.

HOW I CAN HELP

  • I enjoy translating work that makes a political statement in an artistic way. I am particularly drawn to poetic prose and other texts rich in wordplay, as well as psychological fiction. As an academically trained translator, I am able to draw from a deep theoretical foundation when seeking the most suitable approach to a given text.

I’m a skilled translator of idiom and wordplay, sensitive to the specific voice(s) of each text that I translate. If you’re looking for a translation that reflects the unique magic of your source text, let's work together.

  • I have more than 10 years' experience translating texts across the following fields:

    • Automotive

    • Business

    • Environment and sustainability

    • European Parliament

    • Film and TV (subtitling)

    • Financial

    • Legal

    • Technical

    • Video games

I use SDL Trados, Transit NXT and MemoQ. Nowadays, I primarily work with video games, films and TV dramas; this includes subtitling work. I do my best work with clients who care deeply about the quality of their communication. If preserving the nuance and integrity of your text is a priority, we’re going to work very well together.

As a chartered linguist, I can also offer self-certified translations, which come in hard copy with a signed cover page along with the source text and target text.

  • I provide localisation services to production teams in the video game and film industries. Here, I help to ensure that the player or viewer can remain immersed in the experience without missing out on things like humour in the source text. I work closely with developers to preserve a unified experience for a global, multilingual community that plays around the clock.

    What is localisation?

Localisation goes a step beyond translation and involves adapting source language content for the target culture, informed by an understanding of its norms and values.

  • Whether you are an independent language service provider or a company with an in-house translation team, I can help you address more complex work both from a pure translation-technical standpoint and when it comes to how it's ultimately received. My consultancy work has taken the form of:

    • Conducting sensitivity checks of age-appropriateness of music videos for Fortnite

    • Explaining linguistic and cultural details for Hiromitsu Koiso, the Japanese translator of ‘The Descent of Man’ by Grayson Perry

    • Heading up the jokingly named "Jokes Council" for Keywords Studios’ translation of the new Fable game. My job is to anticipate aspects of the English text, such as idioms and puns, that may prove particularly challenging for translators working into various other languages and explain the meaning to them. Hopefully I am saving them extra time and effort!

I love working with my fellow translators to understand where source and target languages may be at odds and how to approach bridging the gap in a creative, well-informed and well-researched way. In practical terms, this could involve helping you understand word history and typical contexts for any particularly challenging turns of phrase that show up in your source text.

I can also offer support as a reader, editor and researcher.

I serve as a reader for New Books in German (NBG), writing reader's reports to help the team decide which books to prioritise for translation funding.

  • I do both grammatical and stylistic proofreading and editing of English-language texts, as well as adaptation from US to UK English.

Unsure of which service you need?

While the proofreading process mainly focusses on grammar, punctuation and formatting, the goal of editing is to craft a text that is stylistically well written, consistent and factually correct. With editing, there is a greater focus on voice, characterisation and plot.
